Abstract

The features of the formation of shrinkage defects (cavities and porosity) were considered with the use of a ProCast software package using a casting made of a magnesium-base alloy as an example. The effect of some parameters of computation (MACROFS, PIPEFS, and FEEDLEN) on the results was studied, and recommendations for their application to various types of castings and alloys were given. It is shown that, when the correct selection of the initial factors of simulation is made, satisfactory results are obtained in most cases.
