Abstract
The process of zircon sintering with magnesium oxide and the regeneration of the latter from magnesium chloride, which forms during the muriatic acid leaching of pitch, were studied. Thermodynamic calculations were conducted with the use of Outokumpu HSC Chemistry software for Windows for the equilibrium products of heating (t = 50–1700°C): MgCl2 · 6H2O and 1 M ZrSiO4 + 2 M MgCl2 · 6H2O. Experiments on the 1 M ZrSiO4 + 2 M MgCl2 · 6H2O mixture sintering and on pitch leaching by strong HCl were performed to verify the obtained results. The possibility of obtaining the mixture of associated zirconium and silicon oxides, as well as the strong magnesium chloride solution, was established.
