Abstract

It is demonstrated that for PVD coatings that experience significant residual compressive stresses the coating bulging and subsequent destruction can be prevented through the formation of discrete type coatings with preset parameters. With all other things being equal, the maximum allowed length of the coating discrete segment will be different for various substrate materials. The discrete topography produced improves self-organization of the substrate-coating system and extends the potential applications for vacuum-plasma deposited coatings.
