Abstract

The influence of the initial state of steels subjected to laser irradiation on the effect of hardening upon rapid quenching has been investigated taking into account the thermal situation arising on the surface of irradiated steel. The following factors controlling this process have been established: inhomogeneity and the general level of saturation of the high-temperature matrix formed upon dissolution of carbides. Probable mechanisms of hardening of the final structures are discussed.
