The problem of mathematical simulation of rolling friction

Abstract

The process of friction of a cylinder (roller) rolling over a cylindrical surface (bearing) is studied; the hypothesis is advanced that the local slip of elements of the roller surface can be replaced with relative microdisplacements of these components within the local plastic compression area. The equation of the profile of local plastic compression of the contact surface between the roller and the bearing is introduced. It yields an expression for determination of the moment of resistance to rolling, the rolling friction coefficient, and the length of the roller’s local plastic compression.
