Orchids from the Greater Antilles I: a new species of Bletia

Abstract

Bletia antillana (Orchidaceae), a species restricted to eastern Cuba, is described and illustrated. This species is similar to Bletia purpurea but differs by the following: 1) the leaves always present during anthesis; 2) flower is semi-erect; 3) flower parts larger; 4) dorsal and lateral sepals straight; 4) petal curved, enclosing the column and the lateral lobes of the lip; 5) lip whitish at base, rose-purple at the apex of the lateral lobe, and yellow at the callus; and 6) lip obovate, with a quadrangular midlobe curved downward.

Resumen

Bletia antillana (Orchidaceae) es una especie restringida a la regi’on oriental de Cuba, la cual es descrita e ilustrada en este trabajo. Esta especie es similar a Bletia purpurea pero difiere en los siguientes caracteres: 1) las hojas est’an siempre presentes durante la antesis; 2) la flor es semi-erecta; 3) los elementos florales tienen mayor longitud; 4) la p’etalos son recurvados, encerrando a la columna y a los l’obulos laterales del labelo; 5) el labelo es blanquecino en la base, rosado-p’urpura en el ’apice de los l’obulos laterales y amarillento en el callo y 6) el labelo es obvado, con un l’obulo medio cuadrangular, recurvado hacia abajo.
