Additional information
We have adopted this spelling in preference toSatureja, the form used by Linnaeus and many subsequent authors, in accordance with the provisions of Art. 73. The namesatureia existed in classical Latin, and was generally used until the time of Tournefort, from whom Linnaeus took the generic name in modified form.
This study was based initially on the collections at the Herbarium of the University of Michigan (MICH), and a selection of those at the United States National Herbarium (US). Subsequently we examined the specimens at the Dudley Herbarium of Stanford University (DS), the Field Museum of Natural History (F), the New York Botanical Garden (NY), Pomona College (POM), Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (RSA), and the University of California at Berkeley (UC). For loans of specimens and for other courtesies we are grateful to the authorities at these institutions. One of us (McVaugh) examined the lectotype ofMelissa macrostema at Oxford, and the Madrid specimen ofSessé & Mociño 2496, before we began our joint work onSatureia.
