Additional information

This report is the second in a series of studies of plants of the Solomon Islands. The first appeared in Botaniska Notiser112: 63–66. 1959 (Irwin E. Lane, co-author). The present paper attempts a complete monographic review of the genusSararanga, indicating known specimens, providing a key, and illustrating the species and their distributions. I hope also to make clear the fact that rather large gaps in our knowledge of this venerable group of plants make impossible a truly exhaustive report. Perhaps the lacunae due to lack of specimens and more importantly to lack of field studies will spur on someone working in the area with these plants to study and collect them.

This work is a partial outcome of field studies conducted while I was a Research Assistant to Dr. Harold St. John under National Science Foundation Grant 1834 (Pandanus Project). I am indebted to a number of persons who have helped to make my own study possible, including Dr. H. St. John, Dr. A. G. Smith, Dr. H. W. Eiekett, Dr. Arthur Cronquist, Dr. Lily M. Perry, Dr. G. Taylor, and Mr. E. H. Bryan. I wish especially to express my gratitude to Dr. C. G. G. J. van Steenis, of the Flora Malesiana Foundation, for his many helpful suggestions; to his colleagues Dr. M. Jacobs and Dr. P. Van Eoyen; to Mr. W. Vink, Forest Botanist, Manokwari, Netherlands New Guinea; and Mr. J. S. Womersley, Forest Botanist, Lae, New Guinea, Terr. of Papua-New Guinea, who have contributed much information.
