The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced the provision of 16 grants worth $US287 million dedicated to the acceleration of HIV/AIDS vaccine development, reports Marketletter: Pharma News Daily. The grants will be used to create a worldwide network of research facilities, incorporating over 165 researchers in 19 countries, in an attempt to encourage researcher collaboration, a perceived failing of existing research efforts. The project is to be called the 'Collaboration for AIDS Vaccine Discovery', with the grants being used to finance 11 vaccine discovery consortia in the pursuit of a “broad range of innovative strategies” for the creation of potential vaccines.
