Abstract

Preoperative radiotherapy in combination with chemotherapy has been evaluated in patients with resectable colorectal cancer. A multicentre trial for the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group has assessed a combination of preoperative radiotherapy and protracted infusion of fluorouracil [5FU]. Interim results were presented at the 26th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Clinical Oncology Society of Australia [ Melbourne, Australia; November 1999 ]. At the same meeting, preliminary results of a separate trial of preoperative pelvic radiotherapy combined with fluorouracil and folinic acid [leucovorin] were presented. Data on tumour response and quality-of-life issues related to toxicity, sphincter function and reactions to radiotherapy were discussed.
