Abstract

Levetiracetam is a piracetam analogue which was originally intended as a nootropic. However, thanks to serendipity, the drug is now a promising new option for the treatment of epilepsy. It is currently at the final stage of the drug development process and has been filed for approval in both the US and Europe. Although not yet licensed, levetiracetam has aroused plenty of interest and at the 23rd International Epilepsy Congress [ Prague, Czech Republic; September 1999 ] it was discussed in detail.
