Abstract
One in 3 people aged > 75 years develops age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness among middle-aged and elderly people. However, the current ‘gold standard’ of laser surgery benefits only a few patients, who risk suffering serious adverse effects. But promising results with photodynamic therapy announced at the meeting of the European Society of Ophthalmology [ Stockholm, Sweden; June 1999 ] should transform the prospects for people who develop this debilitating disease.
