Abstract
New data provide further support for the use of hypericum extract for the treatment of mild-to-moderate depression. Herbal medicines, such as hypericum extract, are the focus of considerable attention at present, as a trend towards the use of herbal preparations rather than traditional pharmaceuticals continues. In view of this, trials investigating the effects of herbal medicines are being conducted to determine their precise clinical role. The results of efficacy and tolerability studies involving hypericum extract in both mild-to-moderate and severe depression were presented at the joint 2nd International Congress of Phytomedicine and the 7th Congress of the German Society of Phytotherapy [ Munich, Germany; September 1996 ].
