Redefining the approach to treating HIV infection

Abstract

The common approach to treating HIV infection is being redefined in the light of new knowledge about the pathogenesis of the disease. Recent findings concerning the interaction of HIV with the immune system, along with the realisation of the importance of viral load and how this relates to disease progression, has led to these changes. Investigators at the 11th International Conference on AIDS [ Vancouver, Canada; July 1996 ] elaborated on these findings and their implications for the treatment of HIV infection today.
