New targets identified for antibacterial development

A significant number of pathogens exist that are resistant to currently available antibacterial drugs. In addition, there has been an increase in the number of patients with impaired immunity, reflected by a change in the incidence of various infectious diseases. In order to try to rectify this situation, new targets must be identified for drug development. A number of potential targets have been suggested. Details of these were presented at IBC USA’s Antibiotic Discovery conference [ Philadelphia, US; June 1995 ].
