Abstract
This year, psychiatrists are faced with a new challenge: subsyndromal symptomatic depression. This recently-discovered subtype of depression has been referred to as ‘the largest unrecognised public health problem in our field [of depression] ’. In addition, a solution has yet to be found for treatment resistance, which still occurs in some 20¶ of patients with depression. The latest thinking in these areas was presented at the 9th World Congress of Psychiatry held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, earlier this month.
