Summary

Adrenaline released into the circulation can be accumulated in sympathetic nerve endings. Release of adrenaline from the nerves enhances noradrenaline release, as adrenaline activates a local modulatory system mediated by presynaptic β-adrenoceptors. It is postulated that stress-induced adrenaline release from the adrenal gland could, through this mechanism, lead to hypertension.
