Abstract
A simple and conventional on-line column preconcentration system for the ICP-AES of copper and lead is described. A discrete aqueous sample solution is introduced into a citrate buffer line (pH 6.8) through a suction sampling cup and is brought to a micro column of iminodiacetate chelating resin to adsorb copper(II) and lead(II) by a peristaltic pump. The metal ions are eluted by nitric acid and the effluent is continuously fed into the nebulizer of an ICP spectrometer. The detection limits (S/N=3) are 1.5 ng cm−3 for copper(II) and 38 ng cm−3 for lead(II) when using 2 cm3 and 5 cm3 of the sample solutions, respectively. The detection limit is ca. 20-fold better than that obtained by direct nebulization of the sample solution. Results of analysis of biological and vehicle exhaust particulate samples are presented.
