Abstract
Adobes are one of the earthen construction techniques adopted in the old Ksour widespread in the desert and rural Algerian areas. The present paper outlines the results of an experimental investigation to assess the influence of stabilisation by cement, quicklime and Date Palm fibres on adobes behaviour. For enhancing the properties of the latter, a series of tests were carried out on blocks fabricated with different mixtures to optimise the stabilisers contents. The key findings show the beneficial impacts of cement and quicklime on drying shrinkage, mechanical strengths and water absorption. The stabilised adobes with 10% cement provided the lowest shrinkage and highest mechanical resistances, whilst those with 10% quicklime offered the highest water absorption resistance. The inclusion of Date Palm fibres up to 0.5% had a mutable effect on mechanical strengths, a positive effect on shrinkage, but negative effect on water absorption of the blocks.
