Assistant or Associate Professor, Materials Science and Engineering

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, has openings for two tenure-line faculty positions. One position will be filled at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending upon the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience, while the second position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level. Both positions are scheduled to have a start date of July 1, 2020. The qualified candidate will have a PhD by the time of hire and expertise in one or more of the following areas of specialization: biomaterials, quantum materials, informatics, machine learning and data science in materials, energy materials, optoelectronic materials, polymer science, or metallurgy. The successful candidates will be responsible for carrying out research, service and teaching in materials science and engineering. Penn State is one of the largest materials research institutions in the United States, and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) is an international leader in materials education and research. The MatSE Department consists of 29 faculty members, 200 graduate students, and 370 undergraduate students. Research programs span the many sub-disciplines of materials science and engineering with more than $16.3 million expenditure in 2017. Steidle Building, which houses the MatSE Department, recently underwent a $52 million renovation that provided new laboratory space, educational labs, office and meeting space, and state-of-the-art facilities. In addition, the Materials Research Institute supports state-of-the-art facilities for characterization, synthesis, nanofabrication, and computation. These facilities are co-located in the new Millennium Science Complex. Penn State hosts several federally and industry sponsored centers, including the NSF-Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) for Nanoscale Science, NSF-Materials Innovation Platform (MIP), Center for Two-Dimensional and Layered Materials (2DLM), NSF-Center for Dielectric and Piezoelectrics (CDP), and Center for Innovative Metal Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D). There will be additional opportunities for engagement with the Institute for CyberScience, Penn’s State’s computational research hub, and with the Institutes for Energy and the Environment, which works to build teams of researchers from different disciplines to enable new partnerships and new ways of thinking to solve some of the world’s most difficult energy and environmental challenges. Opportunities also for engagement with the Huck Institutes of Life Sciences, which offers interdisciplinary graduate programs, operates shared core facilities, supports strategic research initiatives through faculty co-hires and cluster hires, and operates the institutes' Centers of Excellence, among many other activities supporting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research at Penn State.
