The Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) (http://www.vanderbilt.edu/vinse) in conjunction with the Department of Physics and Astronomy (http://www.vanderbilt.edu/physics) plans to appoint an exceptional mid-career or senior experimentalist in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Applicants to be considered should have established a vigorous research program at the intersection of nanoscience and condensed matter physics in areas such as nanophotonics, optoelectronics, exotic materials, applied spectroscopies, and microscopies. Candidates should also have a demonstrated record of success in the classroom and of including both graduate and undergraduate students in laboratory research.

VINSE actively supports interdisciplinary nanoscience activities and recently constructed a new, state-of-the-art cleanroom and high end instrumentation suite. The Department invites applications for a Research Assistant Professorship in experimental quantum physics/materials.

Applicants should have (i) a PhD degree in physics, chemistry or materials science; and (ii) experimental research experience in at least one of the following fields:

  • quantum sensing

  • microscopy and manipulation of nano-objects

  • magnetic resonance spectroscopy

  • optical spectroscopy of nanomaterials

The appointee will (a) work closely with faculty members in research on quantum sensing based on diamond and related materials using optically detected magnetic resonance; (b) demonstrate a strong record of research accomplishments, potential for establishing externally funded research programmes; and (c) undertake light teaching duties at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The long-term successful collaboration of the Technische Universität Darmstadt and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in several areas of research is due to be extended in the Department of Materials and Geo Sciences with a focus on “Materials and Resource Management”. The professorship is therefore linked to the leadership of the Fraunhofer project group IWKS. The project group IWKS engages in sustainable resource strategies, the implementation of economic recycling concepts, and the substitution of critical resources for the circulation of functional materials.

You competently cover the aforementioned main topics in research and teaching. You represent them in research and technology management towards research patrons and research partners and expands the strategic connection between the university and the project group. The collaboration with scientifically adjacent university departments is desired. As an appropriate forerun, the professorship is expected to provide the basic insights in close connection to the applied research subjects of the project group. Your tasks include the advancement of the project group’s scientific profile with the objective to transform it into a separate Fraunhofer institute that you will lead.

You are scientifically established in the areas of materials science and engineering, process technology, or technical engineering. You have long-term experience in the leadership of large interdisciplinary research groups. You are experienced in the strategical planning, acquisition, and implementation of large-volume national and international research and development projects in diverse operating areas. You are competent in the efficiency enhancement of development processes and in the utilization of technology.

International working and teaching experience and/or experience with international projects and interconnectedness in the politics of science are advantageous.

Prerequisites for employment are a completed university education, pedagogical aptitude, a Ph.D. and a habilitation or the proof of equivalent scientific accomplishments.

The position is tenured with a remuneration package commensurate with experience and qualifications, following the German “W-Besoldung” and subject to negotiations between the applicant and the university directorate. The regulations for employment are specified under §§ 61 and 62 HHG (Hessisches Hochschulgesetz).
