Nanoscale Electronics & Mechanics Scientist

The selected scientist will:

  • Work with the management and staff at Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories to develop and maintain a forefront program of nanoscale science and user activities, and contribute to the development of new strategic initiatives and capabilities.

  • Be expected to carry out his/her own vigorous program of scientific investigation and user interactions within the general area of metallic, semiconductor, and ceramic thin film synthesis, nanomechanical testing and small-scale sample design and fabrication, fabrication of novel nanoscale devices and structures, characterization of the structural and electronic properties of these materials, and their integration for device scale applications.

  • Establish a strong national reputation through publications in high impact journals and presentations at national and international meetings.

  • Interact with other sponsors of materials research advances in areas ranging from threat reduction to applied energy programs.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A PhD in a relevant field of science or engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Demonstrated record of scientific nanoscale research achievement through publications, citations, and presentations.

  • Demonstrated experience in grantsmanship and participation in or leadership of small-scale research projects.

  • Experience serving as peer reviewer for publications and proposals

  • A record of effective technical communication in English, teamwork, and consensus building.

We are searching for outstanding PhD candidates to apply for the Harry S. Truman Fellowship in National Security Science and Engineering. The Truman Fellowship provides the opportunity for recipients to pursue independent research of their choosing that supports Sandia’s national security mission. Candidates are expected to have solved a major scientific or engineering problem in their thesis work or will have provided a new approach or insight to a major problem, as evidenced by a recognized impact in their field.

Candidates must have received a PhD degree within the past three years, or will complete all PhD requirements by commencement of appointment, with a broad-based background and extensive knowledge of research in one or more of the following focus areas: bioscience, computing and information science, engineering sciences, geosciences, materials science, nanodevices and microsystems, and radiation effects science and high energy density physics. Candidates must be seeking their first national laboratory appointment (pre-postdoc internships excluded), have excellent academic (minimum 3.5 undergraduate and 3.7 graduate GPA preferred) and research qualifications, good communication skills, and enjoy working in a team-oriented, dynamic environment.

The Truman Fellowship is a three-year appointment normally beginning on October 1. The salary is $111,200 per year plus benefits and additional funding for the chosen research proposal. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a United States Department of Energy security clearance.

TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION

MATERIALS ENGINEERING

The Materials Research and Education Center at Auburn University seeks an outstanding individual for a tenure-track faculty position in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. Candidates will be considered at the assistant, associate, and full professor levels. Candidates are sought that enhance strategic areas targeted by the department for growth. In particular, emphasis will be placed on applicants with a record of research accomplishments in: (1) biosensing, sensing materials, biomaterials, sensors for food safety; and (2) additive manufacturing.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a strong individual research program in one of the above areas. Associate level applicants and higher must demonstrate an active nationally and internationally recognized program. The candidate will be expected to participate in large-scale, multidisciplinary team efforts in one of the above areas. The appointee will teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in materials engineering and develop innovative, cross-disciplinary instructional activities.

The successful candidate must be professionally trained in materials science and engineering and hold a PhD from an accredited institution. The intended start date is January 1, 2016. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has openings available under its Lawrence Fellowship Program. Jefferson Science Fellowship

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is pleased to announce a call for nominations and applications for the 2016 Jefferson Science Fellows program. Initiated by the Secretary of State in 2003, this fellowship program engages the American academic science, technology, engineering and medical communities in the design and implementation of U.S foreign policy.

Jefferson Science Fellows (JSF) spend one year at the U.S. Department of State or the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for an on-site assignment in Washington, D.C. that may also involve extended stays at U.S. foreign embassies and/or missions.

The fellowship is open to tenured, or similarly ranked, academic scientists, engineers and physicians from U.S. institutions of higher learning. Nominees/applicants must hold U.S. citizenship and will be required to obtain a security clearance.

The deadline for 2016-2017 program year applications/nominations is November 2, 2015.
