POSTDOCTORAL POSITION

Dynamic Failure/High Speed X-ray Imaging

Applications are invited for an opening for a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (http://engineering.jhu.edu/materials/) and the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (http://hemi.jhu.edu) at Johns Hopkins University.

The general area of interest is in dynamic characterization of materials, with an emphasis on high-speed x-ray phase contrast imaging studies of failure of geological materials under dynamic loading. The strongest candidates for this position will have experience in one or more of the following areas: experimental and theoretical aspects of x-ray phase contrast imaging, time resolved studies of materials using synchrotron radiation, and dynamic failure of materials.

Candidates for this position must have an earned doctorate in materials science or a related field. IMDEA Materials Institute is looking for Senior Scientists (tenured positions) and Scientists (tenure-track positions) in the following areas:

Computational design of metallic materials to predict the influence of alloy composition and processing route on the microstructure (phases, precipitation, segregation, grain size and shape, texture, etc.) through advanced numerical modeling (computational thermodynamics, computational kinetics, phase-field modeling, etc.).

Electrochemistry with particular emphasis in the following areas:

· Synthesis and characterization of new materials for energy storing devices (physical chemistry of hybrid materials, charge transport in ordered mesoporous materials and on nanostructured surfaces, interfacial processes in multi-materials, etc.).

· Corrosion and corrosion protection of materials.

Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in Materials Science (or related discipline) and demonstrate the ability to carry out independent research which combines high quality scientific research with technology transfer to industry, particularly for senior appointments. Leadership to develop an independent group within the institute’s framework of research activities and good communication skills are required.
