DIRECTOR, MATERIALS & MANUFACTURING DIRECTORATE

An executive with materials and manufacturing expertise is being sought to lead the Materials & Manufacturing Directorate in the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The directorate leads all US Air Force research and exploratory and advanced development activities relative to materials and manufacturing processes. This encompasses structural materials; functional materials; materials and processes support to acquisition, sustainment, and operational organizations; and advanced manufacturing and supply chain management.

Organizationally, the Directorate is a highly specialized, geographically separate organization with laboratory, office, and support facilities. The assigned work force of approximately 1100 military, civilian, and contractor personnel includes a diverse mix of professional scientists and engineers (most with advanced degrees, many with PhD degrees), as well as managerial, administrative, and technical occupations. The Directorate’s annually executes over $500M/year. The Director provides executive direction for all organizational, technical, and financial aspects of the directorate’s planning, coordination, and execution of broad, frequently large-scale and critical R&D activities to advance the nation’s technological base. Programs are national and/or international in scope and require extensive coordination and joint actions with aerospace activities, including many federal agencies, industry, and private research organizations. Work is accomplished primarily through contractual agreements, by in-house research, and as direct technical consultation to requesting outside organizations.

US citizenship is required. A Bachelors’ Degree in an appropriate professional or scientific discipline is required, an advanced degree is desirable, and a doctorate is highly desirable. This position requires substantial experience in the management of a large, complex, technically-oriented activity. A top-level understanding of the breadth of research, development, and acquisition functions is vital to the overall direction and successful transition of basic and applied research efforts to the operational Air Force. The incumbent is required to exercise a high degree of initiative and possess the ability to make independent decisions. The incumbent must also have the ability and professional stature to support and defend, as well as influence, program and policy decisions at the highest levels of the government, industry and the broader scientific community.

TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION

Structural Analysis of Materials

The Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Materials Characterization. The appointment is intended to be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level; however, consideration will also be given to exceptional candidates at the Full Professor level. This position will expand upon current McMaster expertise in materials analysis and nuclear materials as well as contributing to the faculty’s strategic initiatives in sustainability.

The applicant should have expertise in the field of atom probe field ion microscopy, with a focus on structure and properties relationships of materials. The applicant is expected to develop a strong externally funded research program and capitalize on existing and new infrastructure at the university and in particular at the state-of-the-art Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy. This centre currently houses two aberration-corrected microscopes, one FIB, three SEM, one Auger Scanning Microscope, and will commission a 3D Atom Probe and a second FIB. Over the last few years, McMaster University has received funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Ministry of Research and Innovation, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council totaling approximately $40M in materials analysis at the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy and the Centre for Advanced Nuclear Systems. This position will build upon faculty expertise in materials engineering, as well as facilities and experience available through the Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, or a closely related discipline. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an effective research program and demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and curriculum development at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
