The 2nd European Energy Conference will be held on April 17–20, 2012 in Maastricht, The Netherlands. This biennial conference series, launched in 2010, will provide participants with a view and a vision on how the future of energy in Europe could look like. It will be the forum to define the role of energy science and research in the transformation process toward the future sustainable European energy system. The conference is organized by the European Science Foundation, the European Materials Research Society, and the European Physical Society who share the conviction that energy research and development will be substantially more efficient, with faster progress and increased comprehension through interaction of their specialist disciplines: material sciences, physics, chemistry, engineering, and environmental sciences. The conference is chaired by Harald Bolt, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany, under the patronage of Günther H. Oettinger, the European Union Commissioner for Energy, who will give a plenary address.

Other confirmed plenary speakers include Former Secretary General of NATO, Javier Solana; Under Secretary for Science in the U.S. Department of Energy, Steven Koonin; and Minister of Economic Affairs in The Netherlands, Maxime Verhagen (or representative).

Conference symposia include Systems Aspects and Sustainability, Sciences for Energy, Primary Energy Conversion, Energy Networks and Storage, and Efficient End Use of Energy.
