Gerald L. Liedlis professor and head of the School of Materials Engineering at Purdue University. Since joining Purdue his research has focused on crystall ography and phase transformations in metals and ceramics. Liedl is involved in a number of research coordination activities as coordinator of Central Facilities, director of the X-Ray Facility, director of the Microstructural Analysis Facility, and director of MATRIX (a six institution synchrotron x-ray scattering group).

In 1985 he was elected a Fellow of the American Society for Metals. He is a member of the Materials Research Society, The Metallurgical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and American Society for Engineering Education. He is the past chairman of the University Materials Council and is an ABET accreditation visitor for materials-related engineering programs. The recipient of a number of teaching awards, he has been cited in numerous professional directories.

Liedl received his BS and PhD degrees from Purdue University in 1955 and 1960, respectively.
