Th.H.M. Rasing is a staff scientist, Center for Advanced Materials, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Berkeley, California. A physics graduate of the University of Nijmegen, Rasing’s present research involves the study of surface phenotnena using linear and nonlinear optical techniques.

Y.R. Shen, a professor in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, is also a prineipal investigator in the Materials and Chemical Sciences Division of Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory and a prineipal investigator at the Center for Advanced Materials.
