Conclusions

PES studies of HTSC materials show superconducting gap formation and yield the following important conclusions concerning the normal state: It is strongly correlated with atomic spectral features at high energy; there is extensive Cu 3d/0 2p hybridization; for both hole and electron doping EF has nearly the same value and lies in states which fill in the gap of the parent correlated magnetic insulator; and the gap-filling states near EF obey the Luttinger counting theorem. These findings are consistent with either a conventional Fermi liquid picture or a Luttinger liquid picture of the normal state. Further work to distinguish the two in PES spectra is in progress.
