Conclusion

The projects that have been briefly described in this overview barely scratch the surface of materials research at Argonne. Cooperation with scientists and engineers from domestic university and corporate environments continues to grow. Participation in research with foreign organizations is also expanding.

Editor’s Note: This is the third article in a series focusing on the research capabilities and goals of interdisciplinary laboratories pursuing materials research in universities, industry, and government.

Frank Fradin is director of the Materials Science Division, Argonne National Laboratory. Since receiving his PhD in metallurgy at the University of Illinois in 1967, Dr. Fradin has pursued research in atomic diffusion, magnetism, and superconductivity at Argonne.
