Abstract
A master equation describing the evolution of the rotational state of a diatomic homonuclear molecule interacting with an off-resonant laser field is obtained. Besides the coherent driving of two-photon induced rotational Raman transitions with an appropriately chosen laser pulse, also the effects due to spontaneous processes are taken into account. The latter are spontaneous rotational Raman transitions that lead to a decoherence in the molecular rotational quantum state.
