$ 500,000 for Biodegradable Surgical Adhesive

Researchers from RWTH Aachen University have won the world’s largest and richest business plan competition in the USA. The Medical Adhesive Revolution (MAR) team from RWTH had to compete against around 1,200 applications from other aspiring entrepreneurs in the Rice Business Plan Competition.

A start-up company from RWTH Aachen University has won the world’s largest and richest business plan competition. Together with 41 other teams, the group from Aachen was invited to the final round at Rice University in Houston, Texas. The finalists presented their business ideas to investors and companies before facing intense questioning by members of the audience. At the final, Marius Rosenberg and Alexander Schüller, doctoral candidates at RWTH’s Chair of Economics for Engineers and Natural Scientists (WIN), headed by Professor Malte Brettel, succeeded in convincing the jury of their business venture. Rosenberg is also managing director of the winning company Medical Adhesive Revolution (MAR), while Schüller is one of the heads of the RWTH Aachen Entrepreneurship Centre.

Adhesive for Medical Applications

They presented their business plan to the jury and 800 guests. The product is a biodegradable adhesive for medical applications. The jury were particularly impressed by the advanced stage of development, which is the result of good cooperation between industry and academia in the region.

The wound sealing adhesive can be used externally on the skin to seal cuts and lacerations but can also be used internally as a biodegradable product to stop bleeding from organs, or to seal air and fluid leakages, such as those that occur with a perforated lung, for instance. The adhesive seals the wounds within seconds; it is flexible and allows precise application. Potential areas of application are plastic surgery, emergency surgery and many conventional operations.

The Rice Business Plan Competition is the largest and richest graduate-level student start-up competition worldwide. It is organised every year by the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship and the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University in Houston, Texas.
