Anti-corrosion coatings used on steel structures in maritime or river environments are exposed to extreme conditions. In order to carry out reproducible tests of the suitability of the protective systems, reliable testing equipment with a consistent level of performance is needed.
Corrosion protection coatings used in a maritime or river environment must have a very high life expectancy. One typical example of the use of this type of coating is on steel fittings in ports and harbours, where maintenance intervals of 20 years are common. The conditions are extreme as a result of the type of water (seawater), the tides, the mechanical stresses (impacts and abrasion) and the temperature variations. For this type of application, coatings with a thickness of 500 μm or more are often used.
