Abstract

A novel method for total petroleum hydrocarbon analysis in drinking and groundwater by capillary gas chromatography has been developed by means of a technique called Enhanced Large Volume Injection, based on an accessory and an auxiliary gas supply using programmed temperature split/splitless injection with solvent venting. A detailed description of the instrumental configuration and method optimisation is given. The system has proved its worth as a sample concentration technique permitting the reproducible analysis of aliphatic hydrocarbons in water at trace levels with an increased sensitivity and precision as compared to conventional methods.
