Determination of Metal Dispersion and Surface Acidity of a Pd/Al2O3 Catalyst by Gas Chromatography

Abstract

The present work is focused on the application of gas chromatography to the characterization of the catalyst activity of Pd/Al2O3 by chemisorption of probe molecules, considering both the metal phase and the acid sites on the catalyst surface. Gas chromatography has been used for this purpose, using pulses of hydrogen and oxygen to quantify active metal surface area, and pyridine and quinoline to determine the percentage of overall Lewis acid sites. Chromatographic results have been compared with those obtained by a dynamic pulse adsorption technique in a commercial apparatus.
