Summary
Leaf twig of Chinese arborvitae is a common Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The composition of its essential oil had been studied by conventional methods such as solvent extraction and steam distillation. In this work, headspace solid-phase microextraction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) was used for the analysis of the volatile constituents present in the leaf twigs of Chinese arborvitae. Different SPME parameters (extraction temperature and extraction time) and fibres were studied and the results were compared with those obtained by solvent extraction. The results show that HS-SPME-GC-MS is a simple, rapid and solvent-free method, which is an alternative to the classical methods.
