ASO Author Reflections: Transoral Robotic Surgery Combined with Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy for Management of Advanced Laryngohypopharyngeal Cancer

Hypopharyngeal cancer accounts for 3–5% of squamous cell carcinomas in the head and neck, and its prognosis is poorest among patients with this type of cancer.1,2 For a long time, several institutions performed total laryngopharyngectomy or partial laryngectomy with partial pharyngectomy for the treatment of hypopharyngeal carcinoma, as well as, if necessary, adjuvant radiotherapy. Recently, the use of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) as an organ preservation protocol has increased with the development of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.3, 4, 5 However, anatomically preserved organs after CCRT do not mean preservation of an organ’s function, and do not guarantee better quality of life (QOL) after treatment.6In order to improve patients’ QOL, much effort has been made to reduce morbidity using minimally invasive surgical techniques.
