Abstract

Shape-selectivity of alkylation of 2-methylnaphthalene over the ZSM-5 zeolite has been improved by a method of chemical vapor deposition of silicon methoxide. The deposition of silica on ZSM-5 increased the β-selectivity, which was defined as the sum of distributions of 2,3-, 2,6-, and 2,7-dimethylnaphthalenes; however, it did not increase selectively the product distribution of 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene. From the characterization of two kinds of the silica-deposited ZSM-5, it was found that the β-selectivity was enhanced by the inactivation of the external surface as well as by the control of pore-opening size.

  11. The 7r-electron density of 2-MN was calculated on the basis of the extended Hückel MO computer program which was developed by Prof. Kobayashi of Kyoto Municipal University, and distributed via the Catalysis Society of Japan. We used parameters of bond lengths and bond angles of naphthalene, because those of 2-MN were unavailable (Kagaku Binran, Kisohen, revised edition, p. 1395, Maruzen, Tokyo (1975)); the structure of methyl group attached to naphthalene was assumed to be the same as that of toluene. Calculated electron densities in the position of naphthalene (parentheses): 1.0756 (1), 0.922 (2), 1.0320 (3), 1.0047 (4), 1.0086 (5), 1.0190 (6), 1.0063 (7), 1.0202 (8), 0.9649 (9) and 0.9849 (10).
