Abstract
This paper outlines the historical developments in the manufacture of glassy artefacts, whose homogeneity and precisely defined profiles make them so useful for everyday optical applications. For example, distortion-free windows with accurately flat surfaces are relatively recent. This paper will look at the development of processing technology and examine the physical principles involved. An extension of these concepts occurs when internal crystals are precipitated, used widely in both coloured art glass, signal processing and information storage.
