The combined effect of inertial and electromagnetic fields in a fullerene molecule

In this paper we investigate the effects of a uniform magnetic field and rotation on the electronic structure of C60 molecules using a continuum model based on an effective Dirac equation. The exact solution for the eigenstates and eigenenergies is found. It is seen that rotation and magnetic field act in similar ways when they cause the energy levels to split. On the other hand, they alter the energy spectrum in a different manner. It is shown that the splitting may be canceled by a suitable choice of the ratio between the rotation speed and the amplitude of the magnetic field. Additionally, it is found that the known zero modes of static C60 (in the absence of a magnetic field), which are destroyed by either rotation or magnetic field, may be recovered by considering both.
