Abstract

Heavy-fermion compounds are characterized by electronic correlation effects at low energies which can directly be accessed with optical spectroscopy. Here we present detailed measurements of the frequency- and temperature-dependent conductivity of the heavy-fermion compound UPd2Al3 using broadband microwave spectroscopy in the frequency range 45 MHz to 40 GHz at temperatures down to 1.7 K. We observe the full Drude response with a relaxation time up to 50 ps, proving that the mass enhancement of the heavy charge carriers goes hand in hand with an enhancement of the relaxation time. We show that the relaxation rate as a function of temperature scales with the dc resistivity. We do not find any signs of a frequency-dependent relaxation rate within the addressed frequency range.

  • Estimating from the dc conductivity, one obtains a difference in reflection coefficient of 0.0004 between a bulk UPd2Al3 sample and the reference of a perfect short. This difference would by far not be resolvable.

  • Since we operate in the thin-film limit, we do not have to consider the skin effect at all; in particular it is not relevant whether our sample material (in bulk) exhibits the normal or anomalous skin effect, a distinction one has to make when studying high-quality bulk samples of metals at cryogenic temperatures. But we point out that although we study high-quality samples with extremely low relaxation rates, the bulk material will not enter the anomalous skin effect regime: the mean free path of approximately 60 nm at low temperatures is not extremely long, and thus the electrodynamic response of the electrons is local.
