Phenotypic variability of key commercial carp species (Cyprinidae) in the Caspian Sea basin

The influence of other variables on the average values of the variation coefficient by totality of morphological signs was studied on 104 samples of 7 types of carp in the Caspian Sea basin. These variables included sample variability, average specimen size, sample representativeness, and some others. The study focused on applicability of the variation coefficient for the comparison of variability of relative morphological features and restrictions in application. It was found that the given factor is affected by size-specific variability, average specimen size, and sample representativeness, as well as sexual, size, and age variability. On the one hand, these results allowed consideration of the principal possibility of using the average coefficient of variability of morphological signs in estimating the relative level of the general phenotypical change of types or populations and their groups. On the other hand, these observations superimpose a variety of restrictions. For this reason, the use of the given factor to estimate relative variability in (sub)populations inhabiting different conditions appears to be the most prospective method for studying the influence of certain ecological factors.
