Abstract

Treatment adherence plays essential and key role in controlling side-effects caused by chronic diseases and costs of care for older adults. The present research has been conducted to analyze predictor role of perceived social support and aging perception (AP) in treatment adherence of older adults with chronic diseases in south of Iran. This is a correlational cross-sectional study that was carried out on 243 older adults with chronic diseases that were selected from comprehensive health centers in Bushehr city (southern Iran) in 2019 using simple random sampling technique among the recorded subjects on electronic system of healthcare centers. Demographic form, Aging Perception Questionnaire (APQ), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and Treatment Adherence Questionnaire (TAQ) were utilized for data collection. Data analysis was performed by SPSS-19 software using Pearson’s correlation and stepwise analysis. The mean (±standard deviation) age of participants was 68.33 ± 6.16 yr. Among them, 125 (51.4%) were male. There was positive relationship among social support in two fields (family and friends) with treatment Adherence and also subscale of positive control (a subscale of AP) with treatment Adherence (P < 0.05). Similarly, predictor variables namely support by family, support by friends and positive control predicted totally 13–20% of variance of treatment adherence. The findings showed that two subscales of perceived social support namely family and friend support as well as positive control from subscale of AP could be important in prediction of treatment adherence for older adults with chronic diseases. Therefore, it is necessary in any planning, intervention and training for improving level of adherence of older adults with chronic diseases to pay attention to informal supports, family structure and sociocultural platform on that community and also perceptions and beliefs of the older adults thereby to take scientific steps toward enhancement of adherence to medical diets in elderly with chronic diseases.
