Abstract

The goal of this research was to evaluate adaptative changes in the cellular composition of peripheral blood in a recurrence of inflammation in elderly women with chronic obstructive pyelonephritis (COP). We analyzed clinical laboratory data on 50 women with COP, distributing the subjects according to two age periods: a control group comprising women younger than 55 (47 ± 3.22 years; n = 22), and a main group formed of women aged over 65 (70.5 ± 1.6 years; n = 28). During a recurrence of COP, the women over 65 had higher counts of leukocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), compared to their remission levels, by 90.1, 20.8, 71.4, and 31.6%, respectively, whereas the count of lymphocytes was 2.8 times lower. A recurrence of COP in women under 55 caused a 87% growth in the count of leukocytes (p < 0.001) and a 4.8% growth in the count of neutrophils (p < 0.05), compared to the corresponding remission values; the monocyte and ESR levels were 2.04 times (p < 0.001) and 3.1 times (p < 0.001) higher, respectively, whereas the lymphocyte content dropped by 19.5% (p > 0.05) against the remission values. The higher expression of neutrophilosis and lymphocytopenia manifestations can also be attributed to age-specific features in the blood cell adaptation response to a recurrence of COP.
