Depressive disorders among elderly and senile patients during rehabilitation after acute ischemic stroke

Abstract

To define the probability of depression after an ischemic stroke in elderly and senile age and the impact of depressive disorders on rehabilitative treatment, a comparative study of 186 patients aged over 70 and 110 patients aged 33–60 was carried out. The results prove that the frequency of occurrence and severity of poststroke depression do not depend on age. However, depression has a greater impact on the results of rehabilitative treatment among elderly patients than among young and middle-aged patients, which is due to the existence of prestroke emotional and volitional disorders typical of elderly and senile age. Explicit motor disorders resulting from stroke rarely contribute to the development of depression in elderly and senile age, although a combination of severe paralysis and depression negatively affects the rehabilitation results among older patients. Speech and pelvic disorders do not encourage depression and have no negative effect on the results of rehabilitative treatment among the elderly and senile patients, while the situation among the younger patients is opposite.
