Abstract

The aim of the present work was to investigate the effect of Lys-Glu-Asp-Gly and Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly peptides, designed and synthesized according to the results of the investigation of amino acid composition of peptides found in the anterior and posterior lobes of the pituitary, on the morphology and hormone activity of the thyroid in sexually mature and old hens. Pituitary resection has been shown to cause thyroid atrophy and secondary hypothyreosis. Administration of Lys-Glu-Asp-Gly and Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly tetrapeptides under these conditions largely alleviated these impairments, increasing the content of thyrotropic hormone, T 3, and T 4. The recovery of the hormonal function and thyroid morphology was nearer to being complete in 1-year old hens than in 5-year old hens.
