Impact of Dreissena polymorpha and Dreissena bugensis on structure of zoobenthos in the upper reaches of the Kuybyshev Reservoir (Russia)

Abstract

Two dreissenid species, zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) and quagga mussel (Dreissena bugensis) are the mass benthic species in the Kuybyshev Reservoir. The studies on the zoobenthos of the upper reaches of the reservoir were carried out in 1998–2008. The present paper describes the main results of these studies and provides a comparative analysis of the composition and quantitative indices of benthic communities depending on the contribution of dreissenids to the total biomass. It is shown that the total number of invertebrate taxa decreases following the increase in dreissenid contribution to quantitative parameters of communities. This is especially true in the consortia of D. bugensis. However, the maximum values of the average number of species per one sample and of Shannon’s diversity index were revealed in the communities where both dreissenids were present. The species preferring or avoiding these consortia are specified. Compared to D. bugensis, consortia of D. polymorpha are more favorable for other invertebrates.
