Abstract

In the gasless combustion mode of powder mixtures of titanium and silicon, titanium silicide Ti5Si3–titanium ligament metal–matrix composites were synthesized. The structure of the composites consists of silicide grains separated by titanium binder interlayers with a thickness that depends on the titanium content in the reaction mixtures. During oxidation in air at temperatures up to 1000°C, the predominant oxidation of the titanium binder occurs with the formation of titanium oxide TiO2 (rutile).
