A Method for Removing a Preserving Polymer Coating from Archeological Metal Objects

  • Published:

Abstract

Old preserving coatings of polymer glue based on phenol–formaldehyde resin and polyvinyl butyral were removed from the surface of a number of archaeological metal objects by the electrochemical method of cathodic peeling (peeling under conditions of cathodic polarization). Optimal conditions have been selected for carrying out an experiment without violating the integrity of the artifact. The purification carried out made it possible to almost completely remove the damaged coating and preserve the specific corrosion layer.
