Interaction between nitrogen and single titanium clusters

Abstract

The adsorption of molecular nitrogen on a single titanium nanocluster has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy using the “inversed” method of spectroscopic measurements. It has been found that the nitride-like structures that formed during dissociative adsorption can exhibit both semiconductor (at low infills) and metallic (at high infills) conductivities. Defects of nitride-like structures (nitrogen vacancies) have been detected. The dependence that the nitride-like structure morphology has on the titanium nanocluster charge has been revealed.
