Abstract

The method of local diagnostics based on the three-mode problem in an exponentially stratified atmosphere is proposed. The Cauchy problem is reformulated as the cutoff mode propagation problem. Projection operators for all three modes are derived, including the entropy mode as a new element of the developed approach. The formula for calculating the mode energy for an arbitrary boundary condition in the frequency-domain representation is proposed. It is suggested to use this formula as a norm in the space of approximations of numerical calculations or geophysical observations.
